The responsibilities of the Assistant Superintendent of Prisons are very wide and important:-
Administrative Supervision: Supervision of the daily activities of the prison, staff duties and scheduling of prisoners.
Discipline Maintenance: Immediate action in case of violation of regulations among prisoners and staff.
Security: Prevention of escape, riots or any illegal activity.
Welfare: You Must have to take care of Participation of prisoners in education, vocational training, and social rehabilitation programs.
Internal agency Coordination: Expert in continuous communication with the police, judiciary, and other agencies.
Preparation of documents: You must have complete reports, investigation notices, and maintaining records of the prisoners.

There are two different ways in which candidates can qualify for this post:
β£ For fresh graduates
β£ Bachelor’s degree with at least second division from a recognized university.
β£ Preference will be given to students of law, sociology, or administration.
β£ By departmental promotion
β£ Minimum 5 years of experience in the post of Chief Warder, Head Warder, or Warder (BS-07 or BS-09).
β£ An experience certificate attested by the concerned Jail Superintendent will be required, which will be verified by the DIG Jails.

β£ Crisis management skills: You must have decisive action in riot, emergency or contingency situations.
β£ Interpersonal communication: You must have effective and polite communication with prisoners, lawyers, police and staff.
β£ Emotional intelligence: You must have a understanding on the psychology of prisoners and making better decisions.
β£ Leadership: You must have ability to take command, enforce the discipline, and take the right decisions at the right time.
This is an entry-level but very important post that can take you to the following positions:

β£ Deputy Inspector General Jails (DIG)
β£ Inspector General Jails (IG) β the highest post in the department
β£ Basic Salary: Approximately Rs. 45,000 to Rs. 60,000 per month
